The NFL Draft is how all 32 teams add new players from college each spring. Over three days and seven rounds, teams take turns picking the best available players, and the order runs worst to first: the club with the previous season’s worst record picks first, and the reigning Super Bowl winner picks last.
That worst-to-first order is the whole idea, and it is where most of the confusion starts, so I’ll take it a piece at a time.
What the NFL draft actually is
Once a year, the NFL restocks itself. Nearly every player entering the league arrives through this one event, held over a weekend in late April. It sits in the quiet months between the Super Bowl in February and the start of the new NFL season, and it is the moment a team formally claims the rights to sign a player coming out of American college football.
The most recent one was the 2026 draft, held in Pittsburgh from 23 to 25 April. It ran to 257 picks across seven rounds, and the Las Vegas Raiders, who had the league’s worst record the season before, used the very first pick on Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
A quick note on the word itself. Over here “draft” makes you think of a bank payment or a rough first version of an essay. In American sport it means a controlled sign-up: teams pick from one shared pool of new talent in a set order, rather than competing on the open market to sign whoever they fancy.
The next NFL Draft is already on the calendar: the 2027 draft runs from 29 April to 1 May in Washington, D.C., staged on the National Mall in front of the Capitol.
Why the worst team picks first
The team that finished bottom last season picks first. The team that won the Super Bowl picks last, 32nd. That order then repeats in every one of the seven rounds. The point is balance: hand the best young players to the weakest teams, and no one should be able to stay on top, or stuck at the bottom, forever. It is the same design that runs through the whole league, which I unpick on the how the NFL works hub.
The middle of the order is set by how far each team got. The 18 teams that missed the playoffs pick first, in reverse order of their record. Then the 14 teams that made the playoffs fill in from 19th to 32nd, sorted by how deep they went, so the teams knocked out earliest pick ahead of the teams that went further. Where two teams finished level, the tie is broken by the same kind of procedure that decides playoff seeding.
How the NFL Draft is structured
Seven rounds, one pick per team per round. That is the spine of the draft: 32 times 7, or 224 picks. In practice the total comes out higher, around 257, because of extra “compensatory” picks, which I’ll come to.
The rounds are spread over three days. Round one runs on the Thursday night, rounds two and three on the Friday, and rounds four to seven on the Saturday.
Each team is “on the clock” when it is their turn, with a time limit to hand in the pick. In round one that is eight minutes, cut from ten for the 2026 draft, and it shrinks as the weekend goes on, down to four minutes by round seven. Miss the clock and you don’t lose the pick, but the team behind you is allowed to jump in ahead of you, which is the quiet humiliation every team is trying to avoid.
The bit nobody explains: a draft pick is a currency
Here is the part that surprised me most. The prize for finishing last is not a player. It is the right to pick first, and that right can be traded like any other asset. Teams buy it, sell it and swap it constantly.
The clearest example is the 2023 draft. Chicago had the worst record in 2022, which earned them the number one pick. They never used it. They traded it to Carolina, who wanted it to draft a quarterback, and in return Chicago got the receiver DJ Moore plus a stack of picks, including a first-rounder the following year. Carolina spent the pick on Bryce Young. The first-rounder that came back to Chicago turned into the number one overall pick again in 2024, which they used on quarterback Caleb Williams.
So the reward for being the worst team in the league became a star receiver and, a year later, the first pick anyway. That is the draft’s real economy: picks are chips. Half the drama on the night is teams trading up to grab a player before a rival can, or trading down to collect more chips for later.
Those “compensatory” picks work on the same logic. A team that loses more good players in free agency, the market where out-of-contract players sign wherever they like, than it manages to sign gets handed extra picks in the later rounds as a form of compensation. The league adds up to 32 of them a year, which is why the total creeps past 224.
Who is allowed to be drafted
Not just anyone can enter. A player has to be at least three years past finishing high school, the American stage that ends at around eighteen, which in practice means most arrive after three seasons of college football. They also have to have used up or given up their college playing eligibility.
Younger players can apply to come in early, and plenty do: for the 2025 draft, 70 were granted permission to enter ahead of schedule. Before any of it, the best prospects gather at the NFL Scouting Combine each winter, a week of physical tests and interviews in Indianapolis that can move a player up or down the order before a single pick is made.
The last pick, and everyone who didn’t hear their name
The final pick of the whole draft gets a title of its own: Mr Irrelevant. It is a real tradition, running since 1976, complete with a welcome parade and a trophy for coming dead last. In 2026 it went to linebacker Red Murdock, taken 257th by the Denver Broncos.
The name is a joke that doesn’t always hold. Brock Purdy was Mr Irrelevant in 2022, the very last pick of that draft, and within a season he was starting playoff games at quarterback for San Francisco.
Being passed over entirely isn’t the end either. Any eligible player who goes undrafted becomes an undrafted free agent, free to sign with any team straight away, and every year a handful of them make the roster. Worth remembering the first time you watch the picks tick down and wonder what happens to the hundreds of names that never get called.
That is the NFL draft. The event a lot of fans give a whole weekend to, and the trading logic underneath it that even they don’t always stop to explain.
