The NFL schedule is built from a fixed formula, not picked by hand. Every team plays 17 games: six against its three division rivals, eight against two rotating divisions, and three more decided by where teams finished the season before. The opponents are locked in years ahead. Only the dates get chosen later.
If you know the word “fixtures” from British sport, that is what Americans mean by the schedule here: who plays who, and where. It is one of the core mechanics of how the NFL works, and it sits inside the wider 18-week calendar I break down in how the NFL season is structured.
The 17 games, in one table
Here is every game on a team’s schedule and how each one is chosen:

The six games that never change
Every team plays the three other teams in its own division twice, once at home and once away. That is six games locked in before anything else moves.
These are the games that decide the division, and they are why the rivalries run so deep. You play the same three teams, twice a year, every year, with no end date. A team can have a poor season and still rescue something from it by beating a rival twice.
Divisions are the four-team groups the league is split into. If you are not sure how they fit together, I set them out in the NFL’s conferences and divisions.
The eight games that rotate
The next eight games send you against two entire divisions, four teams in each.
Four are against a division in your own conference, on a three-year cycle. Four are against a division in the other conference, on a four-year cycle. You play all four teams in each of those divisions, two of them at home and two away.
The rotation is what stops the schedule going stale. Because it turns over every few years, every team eventually plays every other team, and you meet each division in the other conference at least once every four years. Support a team long enough and it plays the whole league.
The three games that depend on last season
This is where two teams in the same division stop sharing a schedule.
Three of your games are set by where teams finished the year before. Two of them are inside your conference: you play the two teams in your conference’s other divisions that finished in the same position you did. Win your division and you draw the other division winners. Finish bottom and you draw the other bottom teams.
The point is balance. Stronger teams get a slightly harder run, weaker teams a slightly softer one, which is meant to keep more of the league in contention. Those same standings feed the postseason too, which I cover in how NFL playoff seeding works.
The 17th game, explained
The 17th game is the one the NFL added in 2021, and it is always against the other conference.
It runs on the same standings logic. You play a team from the opposite conference that finished where you did, from a division you are not already scheduled against. The twist is home advantage: one year every team in a conference hosts this game, the next year they all play it away. The AFC hosted first, in 2021, and it has alternated since.

Why your whole division plays almost the same schedule
Line up the four teams in any division and their schedules look nearly identical. Same six division games, same two rotating divisions, because those are set by where your division sits, not by who you are.
The only games that differ within a division are the three based on last season’s finish, plus which teams host the alternating 17th game that year. So when you hear that a team “had an easier schedule,” it almost always means those three standings games, because the other fourteen were fixed the moment the divisions were drawn.
Opponents are set years ahead; the dates come in spring
The formula decides who you play long before a season starts, sometimes years out. What it does not decide is when.
Once the opponents are locked, the league sets the dates, kick-off times and running order separately, and that is where television takes over. The best matchups get moved to Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights, and computers test thousands of versions before one is picked. The full schedule, with dates and times, usually lands in the second week of May.
So the opponents are maths and the calendar is showbusiness, and both are settled for you before you ever see a fixture list.
